MetaAds

Connect your Facebook Pages to UpSmith so your AI agent answers every lead the moment it arrives — lead-form submissions from your Meta ads, Messenger DMs sent to your Page, and Instagram DMs sent to the Instagram account linked to it. It's self-serve: you authorize through Facebook, then pick which Pages feed UpSmith.

What's connected today. Facebook lead forms, Facebook Messenger DMs and Instagram DMs are all live. Lead forms start working as soon as a Page is connected; the two DM channels need one short activation step, covered below.

Before you begin

  • A lead responder set up. Your AI agent with a linked channel must be assigned in Settings → Lead Settings — until then, connecting a Page is blocked so no leads slip through. (This is the same gate every lead source uses.)

  • A Facebook account that manages your Page(s). You'll sign in during the authorization step. Business-owned Pages need the right Business Portfolio permissions to appear.

  • For Instagram: your Instagram professional account has to be linked to the Facebook Page inside Meta's own settings. UpSmith finds it through the Page — there's nothing separate to connect on our side.

The Meta Ads card is available to every account on the Integrations page

Step by step

  1. Confirm your lead responder is ready. In Settings → Lead Settings, make sure an agent is assigned to answer new leads and has a linked channel.

  2. Connect with Facebook. On the Meta Ads card, click Connect to open Facebook's authorization dialog. UpSmith asks for the access it needs to list your Pages, read lead forms, subscribe Pages to the lead feed, and — so your agent can reply to DMs — send and receive Messenger and Instagram messages. Grant access, and the card flips to Connected.

  3. Select the Pages to feed UpSmith. Click Show Pages, then Connect on each Page whose leads and messages should flow in. You can disconnect any Page individually at any time. (If no Pages appear, confirm your Meta account can manage at least one Page — business-owned Pages need the right Business Portfolio permissions.)

  4. Name the business on each Page. Each connected Page has a Business name field — this is how your agent introduces itself to people who contact that Page. It defaults to your organization name, which is right for most accounts; set it if a Page trades under a different name.

  5. Leads engage automatically. New lead-form submissions are delivered to UpSmith and answered by your agent. Messenger and Instagram DMs need one activation step — see below.

Turning on Messenger and Instagram DMs

When a connected Page receives a Messenger DM — or the Instagram account linked to it receives one — your lead-response agent reads it and replies in the thread, the same conversation loop it runs over text with Meta as the channel. Because Meta only allows replies to people who message you first, your agent responds to inbound DMs; it never opens a conversation.

Instagram comes with the Page. There's no separate Instagram connection. If your Instagram account is linked to a Facebook Page in Meta's settings, UpSmith picks it up when you connect that Page and sets up an Instagram channel alongside the Messenger one. If Instagram isn't linked to the Page over on Meta's side, link it there first, then reconnect the Page here.

If you're connecting Meta for the first time, messaging access is included in the authorization dialog and each Page you connect is set up for it automatically.

If you connected Meta before messaging existed, your existing authorization predates the messaging permissions, so there are two steps:

  1. Re-authorize. The Meta Ads card shows an Enable direct messages banner. Click it and grant access through Facebook. One dialog covers both Messenger and Instagram. Your lead-form connection is unaffected.

  2. Reconnect each Page. Re-authorize Meta and your Pages pick up the new permissions
themselves. You no longer need to disconnect and reconnect each Page
by hand, and there's no window where a Page is unsubscribed

Once a Page shows Messenger Active or Instagram Active, let your UpSmith contact know (or email support@upsmith.com) so we can switch your DM responder on and watch the first conversations with you. Those badges mean the plumbing is connected, not that your agent is replying yet — DM handling is created paused by design, so nothing reaches your customers before you've said go.

Page states & controls

Each connected Page shows its status. Lead-flow problems always take priority over messaging status:

  • Connected — lead forms are flowing.

  • Subscription Pending — the lead-form subscription is still finishing; reconnect the Page if it doesn't resolve on its own.

  • Missing from Meta — Meta no longer lists the Page, so its leads will stop. Disconnect it to clean things up.

  • Messenger Active — the Page is set up to receive and answer DMs.

  • Messenger Pending — the Page hasn't been granted messaging access yet. Follow the re-authorize and reconnect steps above.

  • Messenger Setup — the Page's Messenger channel needs relinking; reconnect the Page to finish it.

  • Instagram Active — the Instagram account linked to this Page is set up to receive and answer DMs.

  • Instagram Setup — the Page's Instagram channel needs relinking; reconnect the Page to finish it.

No Instagram badge at all means we didn't find an Instagram account linked to that Page — check the link on Meta's side, then reconnect the Page.

Two controls sit above the list:

  • Refresh — re-pull the list of Pages you can manage from Meta.

  • Log Out — disconnects the Meta account entirely and removes all Page subscriptions.

What comes through from a lead form

The questions you put on your Meta lead form come through with the lead, so your agent opens the conversation already knowing what the person told you — the age of their unit, whether they own the home, how urgent it is — rather than asking them again. You'll see the same answers on the lead in Conversations.

If a lead reads "No details submitted," that means the form asked for nothing beyond contact details — name, phone, email, address. It isn't a fault, and nothing was dropped. Add a question or two to the form in Meta and the answers will start arriving with the lead.

Your agent now knows which ad brought a lead in. UpSmith resolves the ad and form names behind a Meta lead and puts them in the lead intake and the agent's opening context — so a lead from a $39 tune-up ad arrives tagged as such, and your agent won't quote a different offer. You'll see it on the lead card even when the form asked no custom questions.

What this unlocks in Ask Jenny

Connecting Meta isn't only about answering leads. Every Meta lead that reaches UpSmith is also available in Ask Jenny, alongside the leads from your other sources — so you can ask things like:

  • How much Meta is actually bringing in — lead volume by day, week or month.

  • How Meta compares with your other sources — Meta next to Local Services, Angi, your website and inbound calls, in one answer.

  • What happened to those leads — which were reached, which turned into booked jobs.

This works whether or not an agent replied. Leads are recorded as they arrive, independently of what your agents do with them, so the reporting is there either way.

Meta ad spend in Ask Jenny is in early access. Reading spend, impressions and clicks from your ad account needs an extra permission from Meta, and we're switching it on for a few accounts at a time rather than all at once. If you'd like spend reporting next to your Meta leads, tell your UpSmith contact and we'll add you to the list. Google ad spend is already generally available — see the Google Local Services Ads article.

Ask Jenny access depends on your plan. If you're not sure whether you have it, ask your UpSmith contact.

Keeping your connection current

Meta expires an account authorization roughly every 60 days, and only you can renew it — there's nothing we can do from our side. UpSmith watches the date for you and shows a banner on the Meta Ads card about two weeks ahead (Your Meta connection expires soon), then Reconnect Meta once it lapses. Click it and re-authorize through Facebook.

Leads and messages keep arriving after an expiry. What stops is your ability to change your Meta setup — connecting or disconnecting Pages — and ad-performance updates. Reconnecting takes a few seconds and puts everything back.

Onboarding checklist

  • Lead responder (agent + channel) assigned in Lead Settings

  • Facebook authorization complete; card shows Connected, with no re-authorize or reconnect banner

  • At least one Page connected and showing Connected or Messenger Active (not Pending/Setup/Missing)

  • Business name set on each connected Page

  • A test lead-form submission reaches UpSmith and is answered by your agent

  • For Messenger: a test DM to the Page reaches UpSmith and is answered by your agent

  • For Instagram: the account shows Instagram Active, and a test DM reaches UpSmith and is answered
